"Fitness is a marathon, not a sprint."

This quote sums up a lot about one's success when it comes to adhering to their fitness goals. Time and time again I see new gym goers come in to start training, with aspirations of crushing each and every goal on their list. They start a new training regiment, commiting to 4 days a week or more. Then two or three weeks later, you never see them again. What happened? Well most likely they burned out, and didn't pace themselves. So how can this be overcome by future gym goers everywhere?

The answer is quite simple, start off slow and then build up overtime. Start with a regiment that is easy to stick with. I usually suggest 1-2 days a week, then build from there. You can accomplish a lot by training smart, with even just 1 day at the gym. When new gym goers commit to too much too soon, they don't give themselves time to recover. They usually tend to overdue it at first, since they feel like they may need to make up for lost time. So perhaps they end up working out harder, rather than smarter. (That's a post for another day) They end up being too sore from the previous session, so they take a day off. Then one thing leads to another, and they're taking more days off until they no longer have that fire when they first start. Then of course inevitably they stop coming.

By being consistent with one thing at a time you'll set yourself up for success, not failure. Over time this will compound and lead to a much more sustainable and enjoyable journey. As you get more advanced you can then add more days as needed. So train for the long haul, not the quick fix.
